ITS has deployed a new add-on, Grackle, for Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets to easily scan documents for accessibility issues. It can be found under “Add-ons” in Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets. From Docs, Slides, or Sheets, click “Add-ons” (then Grackle, and finally Launch to scan the current document for accessibility issues. Grackle checks:

  • Document title and language (helpful when exporting to PDF)
  • Image alt-text
  • Heading use and structure
  • Table layout and headers
  • Landmarks: lists, footnotes, headers & footers
  • Content: color contrast, fine print, all caps, text alignment, paragraph length, proper hyperlinking

Grackle will also provide steps for fixing any flagged accessibility issues. To learn about this and other ways to make your digital content more accessible, see the Accessibility help page.
