Installation of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) version 10 involves four phases:

  1. The Preparation Phase
  2. The Installation Phase
  3. The Update Phase
  4. The Scanning Phase (Optional)

In the Preparation Phase you will:

  • Determine if you need to uninstall anything prior to installing SAV-10.
  • Uninstall any AV program other than Symantec or an old version of SAV (if necessary).

In the Installation Phase you will:

  • Obtain the installation file
  • Run the installation file
  • Restart your computer

In the Update Phase you will:

  • Update SAV with current virus definition files

In the Scanning Phase you will:

  • Scan your system for viruses

Preparation Phase

  1. Verify that you are installing this on a computer running Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional; this version of Symantec AntiVirus is not compatible with Windows Vista.
  2. Determine if you need to uninstall anything prior to installing SAV-10.
    1. If a version of SAV is already installed on your computer you should see a small yellow shield (some say it looks like a cordless mouse) in the system tray (the area where the time of day typically appears, usually in the lower right corner of your screen).

      Example: Small Yellow Shield
    2. If you don't see the shield, go to "Uninstall AV program", below.
    3. If you see the shield, double-click it to open SAV. In the middle of the right-hand side of the SAV window there's a section "Program versions".

      Example: Symantec version
      • If the "Program" line begins with a number less than 8, go to "Uninstall AV program", step 2, below.
      • If the "Program" line begins with the number 8 (or greater), skip to the Installation phase.
  3. Uninstall AV program (if necessary)
    1. Open the "Add or remove programs" control panel. (Start > Settings > Control Panel or Start > Control Panel)
    2. Locate the anti-virus program that is installed on your system and click it once to select it
    3. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button (whichever appears) for the program and follow whatever steps are necessary to remove/uninstall the program completely from your system.
  4. Once the program is removed, close the Control Panel window and restart your computer.

Installation Phase

  1. A link to download the installer file can be found at http://its.lafayette.edu/help/symantec
(Note: if you are connecting to the Internet using a dial-up connection, a speedier installation can be achieved by requesting an installation CD from ITS@lafayette.edu.)
  2. Click on the link that says "Download installer." You will be prompted to enter username and password; use your Network ID and password.
    • If your browser gives you the option to save the file or run/open it, choose run/open. The file will automatically "extract" itself…

      self-extractor - savce.exe

…after which the "Symantec AntiVirus - InstallShield Wizard" will start:

      installShield wizard

Once you see that window, proceed to step 3 below.
    • If your browser only allows you to save the file, say OK.
    1. In the "Save As" dialog that pops up, click on "Desktop" (on the left) to choose the desktop as the location, then click the "Save" button to save the file.
    2. Once the file is saved, close your browser and any other programs you have open.
    3. Locate the file SAVCE (or SAVCE.exe) on your desktop and double-click it. Click OK. The file will "extract" itself, after which the "Symantec AntiVirus - InstallShield Wizard" will start.

      Download Start Graphic
  3. In the "Symantec AntiVirus - InstallShield Wizard," follow the logical steps to get through the installation. This involves merely clicking the "Next," "Install," and "Finish" buttons as they appear. You do not need to make decisions about the installation; the default installation options are fine. The steps and actions are:
    • At the initial "Symantec AntiVirus - InstallShield Wizard" screen, click the "Next >" button.
    • Click the radio button "I accept the terms in the license agreement" then click the "Next >" button.
    • The default installation type is "Complete." You want to do a complete install. Click the "Next >" button.
    • You are ready to install the software. Click the "Install" button.
    • You'll see the progress bar as the installation progresses. The installation can take several minutes.
    • Once the installation is done, you'll see the "InstallShield Wizard Completed" screen. Click the "Finish" button.
  4. After the installation is done, restart your computer.

Update Phase

  1. After your computer has been restarted, open SAV by double-clicking the small gold shield in the system tray.
    Install Shield
  2. Click on the “LiveUpdate…” button. (Note: you must have an Internet connection for Live Update to work.)
    SAV Live Update
  3. Click the Next > button. SAV will contact the update server.
    SAV Live Update
  • If SAV determines updates are necessary, agree to them and click buttons as required.
  • If SAV determines no updates are necessary, click the Finish > button.

Scanning Phase

SAV provides "real-time" anti-virus protection—any time a file is accessed SAV scans it for viruses before opening it. It is not necessary to initiate a complete scan of your computer after the installation, but if you think your computer might have viruses that existed prior to the installation of SAV, running a system scan is a good idea. To do so…

  1. Open SAV by double-clicking the SAV shield in the system tray.
  2. In the left pane of the window, click the “Custom Scan” icon.

    Virus Scan
  3. When Custom Scan appears in the right pane of the window, click the checkbox next to “Local Disk (C:)”, then click the “Scan” button.

    Virus Scan
  4. The amount of time the scan takes will vary based on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your processor—it is not uncommon for it take over an hour.
If viruses are identified they will be reported in a notification window that can be closed or left open. When the system scan has completed, close all SAV windows and you’re done.
