Although Symantec AntiVirus regularly updates itself automatically, "Live Updates" of the software and virus definition files can be run on-demand as well. Why would you want to run a Live Update? Occasionally, if a particularly nasty virus is making the rounds and the Symantec update server gets new virus definition files late in the game, doing a manual Live Update can help ensure that your computer has the best protection possible prior to the next periodic update.

  1. Open Symantec AntiVirus by double-clicking the small gold shield in the system tray.
  2. Click on the "LiveUpdate…" button. (Note: you must have an Internet connection for Live Update to work.)
  3. Click the Next > button. SAV will contact the update server.

    • If SAV determines updates are necessary, agree to them and click buttons as required.
    • If SAV determines no updates are necessary, click the Finish > button.
