Some of the most frequently asked questions about Moodle:

Q: How do I login to Moodle?
A: Go to https://moodle.lafayette.edu and use your Network ID and password to login. If you have forgotten the password for your Network ID, you may be able to reset it using the Password Change Utility. Otherwise, contact the Help Desk (students: 610.330.5506, faculty/staff 610.330.5501).

Q: What browser should I use?
A: Firefox is the recommended browser for both Mac and Windows. Mac users will not see the formatting toolbar if using Safari, and some Windows users using Internet Explorer have reported problems with editing their profile.

Q: What classes are using Moodle?
A: Beginning Fall 2007, a Moodle course site was created for all courses. It is up to the discression of the instructor if they use Moodle for their courses. Once you are logged in to Moodle look for the "My Courses" block in the left column for a list of your courses currently using Moodle.

Q: I've just added a course that uses Moodle; how long before I have access to it?
A: Drop/adds will be processed in the system within 24 hours of being submitted to the Registrar's office. Make sure you remind your Instructor that you need to be added to Moodle when they sign your add slip, and this can be done manually.

Q: I've dropped a class that used Moodle but I'm still receiving email from it. How do I make it stop?
A: Drop/adds will be processed in the system within 24 hours of being submitted to the Registrar's office. If you are still receiving email after this time, try sending an email to your instructor reminding him/her that you need to be removed from the course.

Q: How do I find my courses?
A: After you log in you should see a content block on the far left labeled "My courses". This should list the courses in which you are enrolled that are using Moodle this semester. Click on the link to enter your course page.

Once you are looking at the course page, you will see the main navigation bar across the top along with three columns below. The navigation bar will show the name of the course, breadcrumbs, and a "jump to" navigation bar. These should help you move around the course site. Each instructor can arrange the blocks on the left and right, but the center column should always contain the primary content for the course.

Q: How do I add my picture or change my icon?
A: You should see your name in the upper right corner of the browser window. Click it to reveal your profile settings.

  1. Click the "Edit profile" tab and scroll down to the optional items section.
  2. Click "Browse…" to locate an image you want to use as your icon. Make sure that the file is not larger than the maximum size listed, or it will not be uploaded.
  3. Click "Update my Profile" at the bottom — the image file will be cropped to a square and resized down to 100x100 pixels.

Remember that this icon will be attached to all of your postings and anywhere your profile appears.

Q: I cannot change things in my profile. If I change anything, such as adding my city, or changing the uppercase spelling of my email, and click "Update profile" it reverts back to what was there.
A: Certain fields (first name, last name, e-mail) are based on your Network ID, and these values can only be updated by ITS staff. Any changes you make to these fields in your Moodle profile will be automatically overwritten.

Q: When I log in, my name (or e-mail address) is misspelled; how do I fix that?
A: Easiest way is to use the help request form at /help/ticket. For the problem description include the following information:

  • Your Network ID
  • Current (incorrect) spelling as it appears in Moodle.
  • Correct spelling.

Please note that only inaccurate information will be corrected; ITS will not change proper names to nicknames.

Q: How can I get more help?
A: The "Moodle" help topic on the ITS web site has quickstart guides for faculty and students as well as detailed instructions on using various elements of Moodle. You may also contact the Help Desk (x5506) or Instructional Technologists, Courtney Bentley (x5504) or Jason Alley (x5884). To learn more about the Moodle software itself, try looking it up on http://www.moodle.org/.
