All network-based systems used by ITS automatically log information to help system administrators troubleshoot problems as they occur. The type of information logged varies with each system, but typically includes network addresses of local devices, destination addresses, and network ports being used. Log files on Lafayette systems that require credentials (e.g., Novell, email, wireless) often associate login times and/or locations with usernames.

Access to all log files is restricted to system administrators with the appropriate credentials.

No system retains more than 30 days of log files. The actual retention time varies by system and the amount of data collected by the system.
